Having soul in business can improve profitability. The difficulty comes in having to prove and justify this in short-term “bean counter” terminology. Intangibles are hard to measure, and I know of no accounting reports which reflect the opportunity cost of the loss of human spirit in a company. But the loss is very real, nonetheless. Would any of us have liked to work at the firm of Scrooge and Marley prior to Ebenezer’s transformation?
